Sintering of ceramic materials is a heating method for the consolidation of ceramic powder particles using high temperatures below material melting point, using mainly tunnel kilns, but also batch kilns. In tunnel kilns the parts to be sintered are conveyed through different temperature zones: a) the preheating zone, where binder and organic materials are removed, b) the sintering zone where happened the diffusion, c) the cooling zone, where sintered parts are cooled down.
The sintering process, which can be done under air or inert atmosphere, happens due the reduction of the surface energy of the ceramic powder particles, because of the reduction of their vapour-solid interfaces.
Annealing is a heat treatment used to reduce the internal stresses and increase the ductility of metallic alloys, by the removal of defects on the crystalline planes.
Besides sintering and annealing, heating equipment are also used for labs and metrology equipment, for soldering, coating and hardening of electronics modules, for thermal treatment and resin curing processes. Illustrative pics:
